kasia kay art projects gallery is pleased to showcase the artwork of Kim Curtis and S.J. Hart at Tryon Farm in Michigan City, Indiana. To complement the bucolic scenery, we are featuring two artists who each approach nature in their work with a unique eye.

Kim Curtis, based in Champaign, IL, is continuously inspired by her surroundings. She paints abstracted natural forms to depict the, often ignored, temporality of the natural world. Through abstraction, she reflects on the world’s movements, colors, layers, residues and variables; compelled not to duplicate nature, but to imitate it through her subjective lens.

S.J. Hart, until recently based in Champaign, IL, but now in NY, approaches her depiction of the natural world through the creation of neo-gothic narratives. Hart’s botanical scenes showcase hybrid forms: part animal and part child. These creatures, which she has titled the Songbirds, live between imagination and reality, portraiture and decoration, grief and joy. The Songbirds shift in scale and appearance but always inhabit a luscious forest-like space. The alluring forest, like the Songbirds and the world we inhabit, is an endlessly repeating and mutating space.

Kim Curtis holds a degree from UC Berkeley in History of Art as well as in Painting from CCA.  Both her costume work and her study of Art have brought her to work extensively abroad, mainly in Italy and Germany. She now paints full-time in her studio in Urbana, IL and is represented in Chicago by Kasia Kay Art Projects Gallery.

Trained in printmaking and book arts at the Hartford Art School, Connecticut, and the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, S.J.Hart now works out of her studio in Champaign, Illinois. Her work combines traditional elements of etching, drawing, and figurative painting with a taste for the gothic, abstract, and decorative. Recent series explore the psychological space of figure and portrait paintings, Victorian post-mortem photography, and the weird zone in which zoological illustrations turn into images of childhood.
